Today's Speech from the Throne offers nothing for BC students, and the BC Teachers' Federation (BCTF) is disappointed in this blueprint for the coming session of the BC Legislature.
"There is nothing in the Throne Speech for the students who are still waiting for the support they need. There is nothing in the Throne Speech for the students who are lost in oversized classrooms," says Irene Lanzinger, BCTF first vice-president. "Instead, the Liberal government plans to add more bureaucracy and more data collection, neither of which improves teaching and learning."
The BCTF says the Throne Speech is a frantic reorganization of the public education bureaucracy that fails to offer one concrete initiative for the classroom. Lanzinger says, "this organizational tinkering comes at a time when students and teachers and parents need stability in the public education system. First, the government downloaded millions of dollars of costs on school boards, and now it is downloading additional layers of bureaucracy. The Liberal government is stretching boards well beyond their capacity to function for the benefit of their students."
Lanzinger says the government is abdicating its responsibility to BC students. "Before it enacts new legislation such as that outlined in the Throne Speech, we urge the province to first undertake some thoughtful reflection on the issues that face classrooms today, all of which are tied to chronic underfunding of the public education system."
Lanzinger notes that "the education minister claims the government is spending more on education than ever before, yet the Liberals' per-pupil funding this year is $200 less than it was in 1990."
The BCTF will continue to advocate for students, and for optimum teaching and learning conditions.
