Graduate Studies - Should I or Shouldn't I?
If you're trying to decide whether or not to do graduate studies, the acting director of the Office of External Programs, Dr. Lyn Fels has put together the following points for consideration. They are mainly about the financial advantages of doing graduate studies. If you already have a master's degree or are currently in a program, you may have other bits of advice. It would be great to hear other points of view.

In terms of financial benefits of an M.Ed.:

  1. Cohort students are full-time students and therefore there is a $400 a month income tax deduction for education.
  2. There is a significant pay increase that comes with an M.Ed. (In Vancouver, it's $5,500). So you can basically get the full return of your tuition within 2-3 years.
  3. For older teachers, the last five years of salary determines your pension. Therefore, it makes sense, if you have more than 8 years left, to get your M.Ed.
  4. There is a clause in the Registered Retirement Savings Plan called Life-Long Learning that allows you to take out money tax-free. (You have to have the bank pay the university directly). You have 10 years to repay the plan. (If you're already retired in under 10 years, then you don't have to repay your plan at all).
  5. Students with a UBC student teacher certificate (ie. they have been a sponsor teacher) can use one tuition voucher per semester. (The vouchers are better spent on graduate courses rather than undergrad courses which are basically half the price).
