EUROPE AND NORTH AMERICA (1500 – 1815)

The following internet sites support the BC Social Studies curriculum for grades 8-11. Sites include primary documents, text, virtual tours and graphics in many forms. Unless otherwise stated all sites are appropriate for students and the ones with teacher resources are identified. The web site includes a list of general reference sources suitable for research in a variety of areas as well as grade level lists by key curricular topics described in the IRP. The web site is sponsored by the Provincial Social Studies Teacher’s Association with consultation by Dr. Roland Case of Simon Fraser University .

The following list is arranged alphabetically under key topics from the IRP. Topics include the following: aboriginal communities, Canadian political and legal roots, economic systems, exploration and trade including fur trade, geographic regions of North America, and industrialization.

 

BUILDING OF THE CPR:

Canadian Pacific Railway Resources - This site provides a photo gallery as well as Canadian Pacific Internet Links and information about the current Canadian Pacific Roster.

 

Aboriginal Communities:

Aboriginal Web Sites - Comprehensive list of sites relating to aboriginal topics and issues relating to First Nations Peoples.

Assembly of First Nations - Site includes press releases, articles, resource center, and youth digitalization web site. Online bulletin board available as well as links to sites on land rights.

Early Canadian on Line – Teacher Resource - Site includes 3,000 books and pamphlets documenting first European contact to the late 19th century. Includes sections on native studies and history of French Canada.. Books are scanned in PDFA format so they require Acrobat Reader to open.

First Nations in BC - This gallery includes aboriginal accounts as well as European ethnographic collections of stories in an attempt to describe certain historical aspects of British Columbia. A balance between oral traditions of the First Nations and descriptions of early European explorers is portrayed on web site.

History of the Northwest Coast - A collection of excerpts from journals during the European/ Indian contact period on the NW Coast.

National Archives of Canada - This site includes a thematic guide and includes archives on contacts and early relations, trade relations and alliances of aboriginal peoples. There are also sections on post confederation relations and WW II.

Native Web – An Internet Community - Site includes resources, books and music, as well as links to communities and 80 historical lists. Native Law section of main site is at http://www.bloorstreet.com/home.htm#3. Site includes links to aboriginal law and legislation online and to aboriginal resources including cultural links and relationship with environment.

The Virtual Museum of New France - Site includes general information and settling of New France as well as specific information on 11 explorers (eg. Catier, Champlain, Jolliet, and La Salle); includes a timeline on the French exploration of North America from 1492 to 1508 or examine maps of the period.

Canada’s Political and Legal Roots:

Canada - A wide range of links to sites on Canada including the Canadian political and government documents.

ITAP Nelson Political Science - Canadian Politics on the Web - This is an extensive site with links to discussions of politics and law.

 

Economic Systems:

BC Economy and Technology - Good historical background on transportation, trade and how technology changed the development of shipping and railways to enable trade in primary resources and furs. Explains how ability to extract and process resources such as gold are dependent on transportation available to ship to markets.

Natural Resources and the Economy - Site includes excellent information for geography or economics. Teacher site outlines curriculum and where to find census information for this time period.

 

Exploration and Trade Including Fur Trade:

Discoverer’s Web - A detailed alphabetical listing of explorers which also explain their discoveries.

Explorers Theme Page - Page includes links to resources related to the study of explorers as well as teachers’ resources for links to instructional materials. Site includes links to core knowledge lesson plans, European voyages of exploration in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries.

National Geographic Expeditions - Site contains QuickTime files on expeditions of explorers.

 

 

Industrialization:

A Complete Guide To The Industrial Revolution (Contributed by teacher Kara Lewis)

The Industrial Revolution 1700 - 1850 - Excellent links to a variety of topics including industrialism and society, industries and technological change, factors, steam and coal industries, and the industrial revolution.

The Industrial Revolution - General reference on industrial revolution.

Internet Modern History Sourcebook: Industrial Revolution. (Contributed by teacher Kara Lewis)

Online Encyclopedia Articles Relating to Industrial Revolution - This is an excellent resource which is easy to read and discusses a variety of topics on the industrial revolution.

Steam engines - Site contains 38 pages concerning the history of steam engines and the men and events that led to invention of steam engines. Links to information on the following topics: James Watt, trains, and 19th century of steam.
