BC Election 2005 Education Issues

On May 17, 2005 vote for a government that supports public education! We need to speakout leading up to this provincial election. On the graphics below and throughout this page are links to help everyone become familiar with BC election issues. BC election 2005

Teachers are very aware of the negative impact that provincial governments can have on teachers’ working conditions and students’ learning conditions. We have seen our rights trampled upon, years of hard won contracts ripped up, and our abilities to meet our students needs hindered by under funding. We need a government that meets the needs of British Columbia's teachers’ and students’. BC election 2005

It is therefore important that all teachers and supporters of public education are registered to vote, so that they effect positive impact on May 17th.

CAMPBELL TO BE SUED FOR DEFAMING TEACHERS news flash!

On Thursday, lawyers acting on behalf of teachers sent a letter asking the Premier to apologize and retract his defamatory comments of May 12th. In his comments, Campbell falsely claimed that teachers are "planning to throw our schools into chaos..." in a "duplicitous plan" to strike "only weeks before provincial exams."

The letter (download as a pdf here) corrected the false claims, and requested a retraction and apology from the Premier by 4:30pm Friday, May 13th. The Premier has failed to retract his comments by the deadline, and the BCTF will commence a lawsuit on behalf of BC teachers. BCTF President Jinny Sims said she wants to assure parents that there is absolutely no plan for any disruption in the school year. Disturbingly, the BC Liberals are playing 'politics of fear' with students and parents in the last week of the election.
