A successfull conference was held in Vancouver on October 23, 2009.  The venue was John Oliver Secondary School. The theme of this year’s conference was Diversity: Expect, Respect and Celebrate. Check back soon for an article on the keynote speaker Dr. Hetty Roessingh, a teacher and researcher in the field of ESL. Her recent research focuses on the importance of vocabulary development for the academic success of ESL learners.

Are you the ESL District Teacher for your school district and are you interested in attending Vision Day with the ESL/PSA Executive?
On Vision Day we review what we have accomplished in the past year and our vision for the following year.  We appreciate input and those who have previously attended have found it very worthwhile.   Your expenses for the day will be paid by the ESL PSA.
Please submit a brief email to the ESL/PSA President stating where and what  you teach and any concerns you have, plus any information you think would help our executive make our decision.

Settlement Workers in Schools

The Settlement Workers in Schools (SWIS) initiative is a partnership of the BC Ministry of Advanced Education and Labour Market Development, Immigrant Integration Branch and Ministry of Education. Using funding from Citizenship and Immigration Canada, the Ministry of Advanced Education and Labour Market Development contracts with School Districts across the province to provide a school-based outreach program that helps immigrant and refugee students and their families.

Services include:

These services are provided by Settlement Workers who are placed in secondary and elementary schools and are in most cases employed by a School District contracted to provide these services.

The B.C. Government has announced an increase in funding for "WelcomeBC" doubling funding for immigrant adults to achieve basic English language skills to enter the workforce.
