Morning Presentation and One Afternoon Breakout Session: "Dealing With Anxiety Disorders In School Settings" Presented by Dr. Lynn Miller, University of British Columbia Anxiety disorders are the most common form of psychological distress reported by children and adolescents, and can interfere significantly in the lives of children. An anxiety disorder is a level of anxiety that interferes with daily functioning, either with peer relationships, academic performance, or in family routines. Children with anxiety disorders are shy, inhibited, and avoidant: school personnel are typically very good at identifying anxiety in children but may not use the most effective interventions to support students.
This workshop will help participants to: Increase awareness of the anxiety disorder spectrum Understand etiological and developmental aspects of anxiety Identify basic behavioral indicators of anxiety in children Develop a preliminary understanding of the current research Understand the efficacy of a group CBT treatment approach in schools Be aware of techniques that are useful to implement immediately with an anxious child Become aware of resources in our community
Who should attend? The focus will be on strategies for immediate use by learning assistance teachers K-12, special education teachers, administrators, counsellors, behaviour consultants, and regular classroom teachers at both the elementary and secondary level.
Other Afternoon Breakout Sessions Available:
"Promoting Positive Mental Health Among B.C. Youth” Presented by Dr. Elizabeth Saewyc, McCreary Centre Society Dr. Saewyc, U.B.C. Professor and Research Director for the McCreary Institute, will give an overview of the results of the 2008 B.C. Adolescent Health Survey which “provides comprehensive information on the mental health” state of youth in our province. Although most of the findings are positive “over half (56%) of youth reported that they experienced a mental or emotional health condition and had not accessed the mental health services that they felt they needed.” Dr. Saewyc will discuss how assistance can be given by educators to students who require mental health services and the “obstacles some youth face towards achieving positive mental health.” "Ride Don’t Hide" Presented by: Michael Schratter, Educator and Mental Health Advocate “On August 1, 2010, Michael Schratter, a Vancouver school teacher and newspaper columnist, embarked on a global journey to cycle 40,000 km, crossing six continents and 30 countries and raising funds for mental illness. His mission is to circumnavigate the world, sharing stories with people in different countries, and in doing so to bring attention and awareness to the stigma surrounding mental illness. All funds raised locally through events will support the Canadian Mental Health Association’s child and youth mental health initiatives in their local communities.” This is your chance to hear some of Michael’s stories about his journey and learn about his views on child and youth mental health from a worldwide perspective.
