The "Learning Assistance Vital Link Handbook" is a K-12 learning
assistance resource binder. It was deemed necessary at this time
because the learning assistance role is changing. With changing
service delivery models and the inclusion of special needs students
into our neighbourhood classrooms, today's Learning Assistance Teachers
may be expected to service a variety of needs such as :
- students
with both high and low incidence special needs;
- students with English
as a second language;
- "grey-area"
students as well as gifted students;
- developing programs
for teachers who have special needs students in their classrooms; and
- assisting in the
writing of IEP’s and overseeing CEA’s at work.
The Vital Link Handbook includes information
and forms for:
- program organization;
- timelines;
- conducting school-based teams;
- service delivery options;
- adapting/modifying
curriculum;
- record keeping;
- reporting; and more.
This valuable resource manual provides a
compilation of best practice ideas as well as strategies and resources
from specialists and classroom teachers around the province.
For those who have begun using the new Learning
Assistance Handbook, it has been described as an excellent compilation
of pertinent materials and the vital link between the teacher and
the student with special learning needs.
