A province-wide vote of the membership of the BCTF has shown that thousands of teachers are determined to resist the imposition of a legislated contract settlement.
“It is clear that members are prepared to stand together in defence of collective agreement rights and public education,” said BCTF President Susan Lambert.
After 10 months of unsuccessful efforts to get the employer and provincial government to negotiate a fair and reasonable contract settlement teachers voted 87% to escalate the present job action. 27,946 voted yes and 4,224 voted no. This decision is the result of careful deliberation and thorough debate.
Government has placed teachers in an intolerable position by demanding they sacrifice fundamental union rights and principles.
