File a Code of Ethics or Judicial Council Complaint

• 1. Understand the complaint process

  As a teacher and a member of the BCTF you are guided in your professional practice by the BCTF Code of Ethics. As a member you also have the right to file complaints if you believe a colleague has breached the Code of Ethics.

  The Judicial Council considers and deals with complaints of alleged breaches of the Code of Ethics, or conduct harmful or prejudicial to the interests of the Federation.

  Complaints of a possible breach of the Code of Ethics by a member, or of conduct harmful or prejudicial to the interests of the Federation, may be submitted by any person having a legitimate interest in the complaint and not having available a more appropriate recourse.

• 2. Decide on a process

  Internal Mediation or Code of Ethics Complaint—which process should you choose?

  What you hope to achieve may determine which process you choose.

  • If you hope to resolve the issues with your colleague(s) and repair professional working relationships, mediation may be the better first option. Mediation often provides a more satisfying and sustainable resolution than other more formal alternatives.
  • If you believe that a colleague has breached the Code of Ethics and the complaint is best dealt with through a more formal process, directing that complaint to the Judicial Council might be your best option.

• 3. Proceed with your complaint

  For member to member complaints can be made directly to the BCTF. Please contact Sherry Payne at 604-871-1803 to get a copy of the complaint form and discuss the process and alternatives.

  A member with information with respect to alleged violations of 44.02 (BCTF Strikes/Lockouts) or 44.20 (BCTF Collective Strategies) should report it to the local president.
