about LATA's brochure on the effects of retention and then

introduces Keynote Speaker Dr. David Rose.

Dr. David Rose explains the principles of UDL and then responds to questions from registrants attending the conference in

Burnaby as well as from participants in 7 remote webcasts throughout the province.

Breakout Session A

Kerry Armstrong and Mary-Lynn Epps from Randerson Ridge Elementary School in Nanaimo

presented the results of their Action Research Project and the impact that their UDL-based

teaching strategies had on teaching and learning in two grade 7 science classrooms.

 

Breakout Session B

Teachers from Tamanawis Secondary School in Surrey presented on the impact that their UDL-based teaching strategies had on reading comprehension scores for students in their English 9 classes.

 

Breakout Session C

Shad Moarif presented a series of animated PowerPoint slides that unravel math concepts for elementary and middle school students and address different learner needs by minimizing the density of language

and numerals while increasing the use of visual scaffolding.

 

Breakout Session D

A representative from Bridges Canada demonstrated the many features of the

Kurzweil 3000 program, a program which provides scanning, reading,

and writing support for students struggling with literacy.

 

Breakout Session E

Anita Strang, Nancy Snowden, Craig Sung and Darryl Cummings shared their experiences with enhanced UDL-based teaching strategies and new technologies such as the SMART Board that had a positive impact on reading, writing, behavior, self-esteem and teacher and student engagement.

    

Breakout Session F

Gloria Chu and Barb Hall from Morley Elementary School presented on the impact that UDL-based

teaching strategies and technologies such as the SMART Board and text-to-speech software

had on the participation and progress of students at their school.

 

Breakout Session G

Sandra Jost from Colquitz Middle School in Victoria shared success stories about the

impact that access to text-to-speech can make for students in grades 5-12 in

daily curriculum activities and school and provincial examinations.

 

Breakout Session H

A representative from Duocom highlighted the many capabilities of a SMART Board and how this technology can help deliver digital content in new and engaging ways to all students.
