Student Vote is a resource for teachers designed to establish interest and participation for students in voting. Student Vote provides materials designed for elementary (beginning Grade 5) and secondary teachers, including lesson plans on informed citizenship and democratic engagement, and all the items needed to hold a parallel election on Student Vote Day held in conjunction with British Columbia’s 2009 general election and referendum on May 12.
While the resources available through Student Vote are designed to motivate students, experience shows that when students talk about the election issues at home, their family members are more likely to vote. Many BC teachers registered their classes to participate in Student Vote in the 2005 BC election and in the last two federal elections, and speak very highly of the experience.
Student Vote is a partnership with Elections BC, with the support of the Ministry of Education, the BCTF, the BCSTA, the BCPVPA, and the BCSSA.
