In this lesson, students engage with the captíkʷł How Food Was Given (Four Food Chiefs) to understand how Syilx oral stories function as law, governance, and sustainability teachings. Through two short provocations and a Connect–Extend–Challenge thinking routine, learners explore key Syilx concepts such as water as a living relative, protocols as governance, and teachings as ecological knowledge. A guided listening of the captíkʷł invites students to notice beings, relationships, and responsibilities within the story, helping them see sustainability not as a set of environmental problems but as maintaining the relationships, gifts, and obligations that support healthy communities and ecosystems.
