This ELL lesson introduces students to Black Strathcona, a historic Black community in Vancouver. Students learn how Black immigrants, homesteaders, and railroad porters built a strong neighbourhood, how the community thrived, and how government expropriation and demolition later displaced many residents. They practice summarizing, using key vocabulary, and discussing why this history is important.
