About This Resource

This unit provides opportunities for students to develop an understanding of the uniqueness of stories by First Peoples authors, including: role of narrator, recursive, circular structures, symbols and motifs (e.g., shape-shifter, trickster), the importance of humour, an understanding of the role that stories play in traditional and contemporary First Peoples cultures (e.g., oral tradition, contemporary social and political issues), an understanding of literary elements and devices as evidenced in stories by First Peoples authors, and the ability to respond to aspects of stories (literary, social, ethical) in oral and written communications.
