Context
In June 2025, the Ministry of Education and Child Care announced that the province would be moving toward mandatory literacy screening at the K–3 level. As part of this government initiative, the Ministry is developing, in conjunction with researchers, a BC specific literacy screening tool that will become mandatory at the start of the 2027–28 school year.
The goal of the literacy screening teacher focus group is to provide information and context about teaching and learning in BC to the members of the research team working on the development of the BC screening tool. This information will be helpful for these researchers in ensuring that they are able to make both the screening itself and the screening results as useful to teacher as possible.
The Ministry has requested a group of twelve teachers, with three teachers at each grade level, including one French Immersion teacher at each grade level.
Term
The term of appointment will be from March 2026 to June 2028.
The initial meeting will be between March 31, 2026–April 2, 2026, with dates to be confirmed by the Ministry with the research team. There will be two sessions, one for the grade K–1 teachers and one for the grade 2–3 teachers. Each meeting is virtual and is expected to last 90 minutes, from 3:30–5:00 p.m. on weekdays.
Future meetings will be on an ad-hoc basis and there are likely to be no more than two meetings per school year. All meetings will be virtual, after school, 3:30–5:00 p.m. and will be a maximum of 90 minutes.
