About This Resource

Les Pirates d’outre-tombe is better suited for age 10 plus as the level of French is higher and the pages more numerous. It presents a sixteen-year-old boy born of the Acadian diaspora who attempts a second time to rejoin his father in the Maritimes. In 1787, he leaves Southampton, England, with his much older brother for the colony of New Brunswick. A storm on the Atlantic, a mutiny, a shipwreck in Cape Breton, pirates (a reality in that part of the world at that time), and love get in the way, but a young Acadian girl of fifteen and her Mi’kmaw fiancé save the day.

Throughout this adventure, the reader learns about the multifaceted Acadian experience post-diaspora and its impact on the region’s history. This resource book gives already-made exercise sheets to strengthen French vocabulary and the capacity for character analysis and comprehension. It offers many class-wide and school-wide opportunity for activities related to history, food, tourism and, of course, pirates!
