The victims of the shooting at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School have now been identified, and BC teachers are paying tribute to the incredible loss they leave behind. The death of any child is a tragedy, and we mourn the loss of not only their lives but their potential and their futures. We also share our grief over the loss of Shannda Aviugana-Durand, an education assistant and BCGEU member. Education assistants are some of our closest colleagues, partners, and friends. It is a relationship that is both professional and personal, and we know the incredible role they play in providing students with the support they need to succeed. We value and honour her meaningful contribution to students in her community, and we share our profound condolences with her family and loved ones. Schools should be places of safety, compassion, and support. We will continue to do everything we can to care for and be in service of students and families.
