Locals have two options for booking health and safety workshops:

1. Health and Safety workshop:  local booking as a SURT
2. Joint Committee Health and Safety workshops:  district booking as a tripartite session*

For option 2, the BCTF will bill the school district a flat fee of $1,000 per day or $500 per half-day, to cover all the costs of our facilitators. The school district is responsible for any reasonable travel, meal, and room costs of participants. In addition, the school board is expected to pay for the photocopying of all workshop materials.

* Only these three joint committee workshops can be booked for this option:

An In-Depth Look at the Role of Joint Health and Safety Committees

(3 hours)

An in-depth Look at the Role of Joint Health and Safety Committees - CoverThis workshop looks at the duties and functions of the joint health and safety committee in the context of the four basic rights of all workers in BC and of the general duties of employers, workers, and supervisors.  Participants will discuss common situations committees face and will examine the effectiveness of their own committees.  This workshop is suitable as a SURT or for a tripartite audience.

 

Ergonomics

(3 hours)

Ergonomics CoverBritish Columbia has comprehensive workplace ergonomics regulations to prevent musculoskeletal injuries. This workshop provides basic information about ergonomics, musculoskeletal injuries, and the ergonomics requirements in the Occupational Health and Safety Regulation. Participants will learn how to identify ergonomic problems and musculoskeletal injuries in their workplaces, some risk assessment techniques, and some effective control measures that can be implemented to reduce the risk to workers of musculoskeletal injuries.

 

Incident Investigations and Reports

(3 hours)

Incident Investigations and ReportsThe legal requirements of incident investigations and reporting are reviewed in this session. Various types of incidents and causes of incidents will be discussed. Participants will proceed through the stages of investigation—necessary facts, investigative tools, visiting the scene, interviewing, and evaluating.

 

Incident Reporting

Incident Reporting

Incidents are increasing in the education sector. Reporting these incidents protects all workers. When all workers know how to report incidents, it improves safety in the workplace. The process and outcomes of incident reporting will be examined in detail. Participants will discover the importance of why incident reporting is crucial for maintaining a safe workplace for all workers. Participants will gain an awareness of the importance of Incident Reporting as it pertains to the Occupational Health and Safety Regulations.

 

Joint Health and Safety Committees/Worker Representatives

(3 hours)

Joint Health and Safety Committees Worker Reps - CoverParticipants will go over successful strategies for effective committees, including organization of meetings and reporting responsibilities. Scenarios and discussion of duties and responsibilities, including committee terms of reference, will be included. This workshop is suitable as a SURT or for a tripartite audience.

 

Occupational Health and Safety Program Overview

Occupational Health and Safety Program OverviewHave you ever wondered why your employer implements health and safety policies and procedures for all workers? It is because every employer is mandated by law to have an Occupational Health and Safety Program. This workshop provides an overview of why these programs are in place, where the responsibilities lie for health and safety, the positive health implications for all workers, and the cost savings that come from having an effective program. Participants will receive an overview of the contents and goals of an effective Occupational Health and Safety Program and come away with an understanding of where they belong in this program.

 

Occupational Health and Safety Training for New Committee Members and Worker Reps

OH&S Training New Committee Members and Worker Reps - CoverThis workshop is designed for new members of Joint Occupational Health and Safety Committees in their first six months on a committee. Effective April 3, 2017, WorkSafeBC regulations require all new members of committees and worker reps to receive 8 hours of instruction on prescribed health and safety topics (OHSR 3.27). This workshop satisfies that requirement. The content of the workshop also serves as a good back-to-basics refresher for all committee members.  This workshop is suitable as a SURT or for a tripartite audience.

Note: The training prescribed for new committee members is outside of the 8-hour annual educational leave entitlement for all committee members under Section 41 of the Workers’ Compensation Act.

 

Refusal of Unsafe Work

(3 hours)

Refusal of Unsafe WorkNo worker is required to enter a work situation that they reasonably believe puts them at undue risk of harm. This workshop navigates the refusal process as per regulation and applies it to the school setting. Scenarios and examples are reviewed in order for participants to understand the kinds of circumstances under which refusal may occur.

 

Role and Function of the School Site Health and Safety Rep

(3 hours)

Role and Function School Site Health and Safety RepThe School based health and safety rep is more than just another body around the Joint Occupational Health and Safety committee table. This workshop explores the role of the health and safety rep from the union activist perspective. The Health and safety rep is an advocate, an advisor, and an assistant. This workshop explains these roles and how they fit in the union role.

 

Safety Inspections

Safety Inspections

It is everyone’s responsibility to maintain a safe workplace and regular safety inspections are part of an effective health and safety program. The process and outcomes of Safety Inspections will be examined in detail in this workshop. Participants will discover the importance of why Safety Inspections are crucial for maintaining a safe workplace for all workers. Participants will leave this workshop with a full awareness of the importance of conducting Safety Inspections and making recommendations as they pertain to the Occupational Health and Safety Regulations.

 

Violence in the Workplace

(3 hours)

Violence in the WorkplaceWorkplace violence is becoming a growing concern in the education sector. Every year, an increasing number of workers in schools are victims of threats and violence in the performance of their jobs. This workshop explores the definition of violence, types of violence, and what is required to assess and plan to eliminate or reduce risks. The workshop discussions include risk assessment, safety plans, privacy issues, and the right to know, all with a focus on keeping workers safe.

 

Violence Prevention

Violence Prevention

This workshop reviews the WCB language on violence prevention. Participants will learn the definition of violence, the risks associated with violence, the components of a robust violence prevention program, reporting violent incidents, incident investigations, and how to conduct risk assessments. The K-12 Violence Prevention Toolkit and district-specific documents will be reviewed.
