The BC Teachers’ Federation (BCTF) is seeking a total of 14 members with experience teaching Grades 4-6 and Grades 9-12 to co-develop climate change education materials that support teachers across all learning areas. 

BCTF members selected will represent the BCTF on the following levels:

Project

People across BC are increasingly experiencing the effects of climate change, including more frequent and intense wildfires, floods, droughts and heatwaves, impacting the wellbeing of ecosystems, people and communities. Climate change education throughout K–12 has a central role to play in helping learners, families, and communities understand why our climate is changing, what the impacts are, solutions to reducing emissions, and actions to prepare and adapt to a changing climate.

The Ministry of Energy and Climate Solutions (MECS), in partnership with the Ministry of Education and Child Care (MECC) is working with educators to develop curriculum-aligned, BC-based climate education materials for Grades K–12. The resources are broken into Kindergarten to Grade 3 (published Spring 2025), Grades 4 to 8 (drafted, learning stories complete for Grades 7 and 8) and Grades 9 to 12 (development starts Fall 2026).

These resources will support classroom learning by providing usable examples of climate change learning opportunities developed and tested by BC teachers, flexible entry points inclusive of all learners, and factual trusted resources and information to expand students’ understanding of climate change in the context of British Columbia.

In collaboration with the MECS and MECC:

Grades 4–6 teachers will be developing, piloting and writing up learning stories. Sample learning stories can be found in Climate Change Connections in the B.C. Climate Change Connections in the B.C. Curriculum: Kindergarten - Grade 3: Kindergarten - Grade 3 (starting on page 37). Future activities may include reviewing the draft Grade 4–8 climate education resource and curriculum connections guide.

Grades 9–12 teachers will be providing input through two focus groups, including by developing learning strategies to inform the content of the Grade 9–12 climate education resource. Teachers will be asked to review materials between meetings and provide feedback. Future activities may include identifying curriculum connections; developing, piloting and writing up learning stories; and reviewing resource components.

Time and commitment

Selected applicants will be appointed from September 2026 to June 30, 2028. Participation will involve online meeting(s) and resource development activities. Meetings and tasks are to be completed outside of contracted teaching hours. Participants are expected to attend all sessions for their group via video call. Participants will be remunerated for all meeting time and completed work.

• Grade 4–6: Project kickoff meeting on Tuesday, October 6, 2026: 4:30 – 5:30 p.m. PST
• Grades 9–12: Project kickoff meeting on Monday, October 5, 2026: 4:30-6:00 p.m. PST
  and follow-up call Wednesday, October 14, 2026: 4:30-6:00 p.m. PST.
  

Teachers’ ideas and contributions may be included in the Climate Change Connections in the B.C. Curriculum resources for Grades 4–8 and Grades 9–12. The completed resources will be shared with BC teachers as free teaching materials.  

Remuneration

Participating educators will be remunerated for their contribution, including time spent attending virtual meetings and reviewing and developing materials outside of meetings. Participants will receive $325 for each seven hours of work done outside of district-contracted hours, from the Ministry of Environment and Climate Solutions. The total time commitment for all phases of this project may include work up to 21 hours.

Selection criteria:

• active BCTF membership status
• awareness of the role and responsibilities of representing the BCTF and the teaching profession, including the ability to work collaboratively in a co-constructive team environment and to meet deadlines
• familiarity with the BC curriculum
• familiarity with climate change and climate action
• experience developing learning/resource materials
• working as a Grade 4–6 or Grade 9–12 classroom teacher during the 2026–27 school year
• balance of diversity—gender, Aboriginal, regional representation, etc., will be sought
• teachers with experience teaching Land-based Learning or Indigenous education are encouraged to apply.
