The BCTF is currently seeking 70 active BCTF members who meet the qualifications outlined in this document to evaluate classroom resources for Focused Education Resources on behalf of their colleagues in BC, the Yukon, and the Northwest Territories. The term of appointment is three years (2026–29). Resources to be evaluated include fiction, non-fiction, reference, and learning technologies delivered in print or digital formats.
Focused Education is a not-for-profit organization created to fulfil a mission of supporting excellence in K–12 education. Their shared offerings provide school districts, independent schools and First Nations schools with a comprehensive suite of resources created to help optimize every aspect of education delivery.
Evaluation reviews are available for reference by all Focused Education members through the K–12 Evaluated Resource Collection. To view the full evaluation records, create an account or log in with an existing account.
Work and workload
Following successful completion of the online evaluation training modules, pairs of BCTF-appointed evaluators will be offered assignments for collaborative review. Resources will be made available online for review or sent directly to the evaluator’s residence and assigned a Focused Education identification number for tracking purposes. No additional personal information will be required or shared.
The number and frequency of assignments offered will vary and is not guaranteed. Evaluators who are paired for an assignment will self-schedule time to collaborate on reviewing each resource, developing their evaluation, and data entry into an online form. There are three evaluation sessions each year—summer, fall, and winter/spring. Prior to each session, evaluators are surveyed for their availability, with the understanding that existing commitments may prevent someone from accepting an assignment.
Evaluators may indicate availability for more than one assignment. However, depending on overall availability and the types of resources requiring review, an individual may not receive an assignment offer in every session. Evaluations usually occur over a six-to-eight-week time period.
The work includes:
- individually scanning and reading the resource
- scheduling and participating in an online environment (Teams, Zoom, etc.)
- working in pairs to discuss findings and reach consensus
- collaboratively completing the online evaluation form with accuracy and detail for each resource
- maintaining confidentiality and giving attention to copyright guidelines.
Compensation
Evaluators are under personal contract with Focused Education and are compensated for training and assigned evaluation tasks based on their predetermined rate for resource type, outside of teaching hours and on their own time. Compensation is based on the amount, size, and type of resource to be evaluated. Print sources are shipped directly to evaluators and are theirs to keep.
Training
- All evaluators must successfully complete the required training by specified dates before they will be offered assignments. Two training sessions are offered for new evaluators, including individuals who have not served as evaluators within the past four years. Returning evaluators are required to attend one refresher session.
- Additional workshop/refresher sessions may be required from time to time with compensation.
- Training consists of a self-paced online program, available 24/7, and structured webinars hosted by the course facilitator.
- Attendance is mandatory for the webinars.
